The Santa Catharina a Portuguese merchant ship was seized by the Dutch East India Company in February 1603 while traveling from Macau to Melaka. The sale of its extremely valuable cargo doubled the Companys capital. This incident marked the start of the Dutch–Portuguese War that was to put an end to the Portuguese trade monopoly in the East Indies.
