When it comes to pilot’s wristwatches, there are perhaps only a few
names that pop up in the collector's mind, and IWC is one that always
comes first. With an illustrious history and contribution to aviation
heritage, IWC created their very first pilot’s wristwatch in 1936
catering towards professionals from the civil service. Known most
notably for their Big Pilot collection, the firm released the very first
in the 1940s, with a large case dimension of 55mm diameter designed to
be worn on the exterior of the flight jacket.
The present
example IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition Top Gun is a modern
iteration made as an homage to the U.S Navy's "Top Gun" elite fighter
pilot school. With a distinct dial layout retaining its triangle
“dotted” 12 o’clock indexes, the chronographic hands is subtly tipped
with a red fighter jet. Encased in a blackened ceramic and titanium 46mm
diameter case, it certainly exudes the vibes of a modern military grade
timepiece. Not only comprised of the usual three chronographic
counters, it also indicates the day and date, heightening the overall
practicality of the Pilot’s chronograph.
