The legendary Royal Oak was designed by Gérald Genta in 1972 to establish the market for high-end steel sports watches as a status symbol rather than a professional tool. While the Royal Oak has remained to be one of the most symbolic icon in the horology world, it was not only until the 1990s before Audemars Piguet decided to include the chronograph complication in their Royal Oak collection, it was the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993 and the Royal Oak “Jumbo” chronograph in 1997-1998.
